Simon Hopkins, managing director of Global Fund Analysis, warns that if the market is to continue to takes investors on a roller coaster ride in a generally downward direction, hedge funds, with absolute return objectives and downside protection characteristics, will continue to elicit both wider retail and institutional appeal. Diversification, as a function of a diminished correlation of returns with a benchmark, is starting to appeal to the pension industry in Continental Europe, it would seem. However, GFA warns that the plethora of institutional offerings is unlikely to presage the wholesale entry of pension funds into hedge funds, as few are genuinely equipped to mitigate the risks of investing in an asset class still populated largely with unknown quantities.
