Simon Hopkins, managing director of Global Fund Analysis, warns that if the market is to continue to takes investors on a roller coaster ride in a generally downward direction, hedge funds, with absolute return objectives and downside protection characteristics, will continue to elicit both wider retail and institutional appeal. Diversification, as a function of a diminished correlation of returns with a benchmark, is starting to appeal to the pension industry in Continental Europe, it would seem.
